Amplitude Frequency Response
We have noted above that amplitude A0 of steady-state oscillation depends upon the frequency ω of the external harmonic force. Hence, with the change of ω, the amplitude changes.
The curve in fig. showing the dependence of amplitude on frequency is called the amplitude-frequency characteristic of a forced harmonic oscillator. The curve shows that the amplitude becomes maximum when ω is nearly equal to natural frequency ω0 of the oscillator. Oscillations with maximum amplitude are called resonance oscillations and the frequency ω = ωR at which resonance occurs (i.e. amplitude becomes maximum) is called resonance frequency. When ω deviates from ωR, the amplitude of oscillations sharply decreases.
