Elastic Rod Vibration
When longitudinal vibrations are produced in a rigid elastic rod, each particle (atoms) of the rod vibrates about its mean position along the length (i.e. longitudinally) of the rod. The vibration of each particle is described by
where Y is Young’s modulus and is density of the rod.
The velocity of travelling waves along the rod is given by .
Young’s modulus or elasticity denotes the restoring force and ρ denotes the inertia.
