Wave Motion

An important and interesting type of motion that occurs in nature is wave motion. A wave motion is a disturbance, a condition of some kind, which moves from one place to another by means of a medium, such that the medium itself is not transported. The disturbance transmits both energy and momentum to distant regions moving with a velocity which depends upon characteristics of the medium of propagation. A typical example are the long swells in the sea; the mighty rolling motion appears to be rushing onwards, but really does not carry any significant mass of water as it reaches the shore. Water waves in particular are complicated – these are, in general, combination of both transverse and longitudinal oscillations in three dimensions. Here, we shall confine to wave motion in one dimension and that too mostly to harmonic waves.
