Depth of Focus
Depth of focus is the maximum distance by which the film in a camera may buckle (move forward or backward along the axis) without causing the blurring of the image.
Let r be the radius of the exit pupil of the coaxial optical system (camera lens system) and P the point image. When film is moved forward by a distance x1, the ray passing through the point A on the circumference of the exit pupil E, cuts the plane passing through P1 and normal to the axis at the point B. When the film is moved backward by a distance x2, the ray passing through the point A cuts the plane passing through P2 and normal to the axis at the point C. The location of the point P2 is such that x1 = x2.
∴ P1B = P2C = R
Δs PP1B and POA are similar
But, x2 = x1
Determination of the depth of focus in a camera is of the great importance. It helps in estimating the amount by which the film in the camera may buckle without disturbing the image beyond the tolerable limit.
