Seven Crystal Systems
There are seven basic unit cells. These are called seven crystal systems.
They are: (1) cubic, (2) tetragonal, (3) orthorhombic, (4) rhombohedral, (5) monoclinic, (6) hexagonal and (7) triclinic.
Their unit cell specifications are given in the following table.
In the seven crystal systems given above the cubic system is the simplest and most symmetrical and the triclinic crystals are the least symmetrical. It is interesting to note that more than half the naturally occurring crystals belong to the cubic system.
