Mercury Vapour Lamp
It consists of two bulbs P and Q. The space between P and Q is evacuated. The inner bulb P contains a small quantity of mercury and argon. E1 and E2 are two electrodes and S is a starting electrode. S is connected to the remote electrode E1 through a high resistance R. An A.C. source of 50 hertz is connected between the points a and b.
In the beginning, when the mains voltage is switched on, a potential difference is introduced between E2 and S. Ionization of argon takes place between E2 and S. After sometime, ionization of argon takes place between E1 and S. The lamp warms up and mercury vaporizes gradually. The pressure inside the bulb increases. When the discharge takes place between E1 and E2 mercury glows with greenish blue colour. This lamp is commonly used new-a-days.
