Types of Amines
Aliphatic and Aromatic Amines
Amines are further classified broadly into two categories:
1. Aliphatic Amines: In this type of amines, the nitrogen atom may be bonded in one or more alkyl chains. Some examples are:
2. Aromatic Amines: these can further be classified into two types:
(a) Aryl Amines: in this type of amines, the nitrogen atom is bonded to one or more aryl groups directly.
(b) Aralkyl Amines: in this type of amines, the nitrogen atom is bonded to the side chain of the aromatic systems.
Simple and mixed amines
Secondary and tertiary amines can be further classified into two categories, namely simple amines and mixed amines. If the alkyl or aryl groups bonded to N atom are same, the amine is called simple amine. However, if alkyl or aryl groups bonded to the nitrogen atom are different, the amine is called mixed amine.
